Goal Achievement Quote – June 18, 2012

“Discipline in its highest notion is not punishment or self-punishment. It is rather something seminal to the self. It is our foundation. It is our architecture. It gives us structure. It allows us to steer our energies and pull our wagon.”
—Noah Benshea

Poetry, prose, and quotes often have different meanings or interpretations based on the reader’s life experiences. Below, I have offered my initial inference of what the words above mean to me. Please feel free to leave yours in the comments section so that other readers might realize a more diverse interpretation. (The context in which the words may have been originally presented, and by whom, are not the primary issues, just what the words might mean to us, or for us, individually, in the now.)

My interpretation of this quote: Developing the ability to do what is necessary instead of what might be more enjoyable or preferable will determine our level of success in life.

  1. Today I return to work after 5 weeks off with a broken leg. My interpretation of this: I am aching for the structure and discipline of balancing work and home in order to “get things done” and be more effective. Too much time on my hands left me up in the air!

    • Very interesting! The discipline of structure. I believe we think alike on this one. I have stated planning vacations by the hour instead of by the minute as I get older though. 🙂 Hope you leg and spirit are both mending quickly. Best wishes. ~Paul
