It’s always nice to remember what it means to be a Winner. A winner isn’t someone who beats the competition. This isn’t just a nice way of putting it. A winner isn’t just someone who accomplishes the goal. Goals can change. Goals can be achieved — but then UN-achieved, like if you stop doing fitness after achieving your “goal.”

You see, the “never quit” definition of Winner is much more robust. It requires greater strength of character. It also provides a more positive framework for those who don’t achieve their “goals”.

I’ve thought about it. Is the GOAL of becoming a star basketball player more important than BEING a basketball player at heart? The latter is much deeper and centered on where your heart is. Your actions may be slow, incremental, irregular, and timid, but if you KNOW that you’re a basketball player, that changes the way you play. For a long, long time, you’ll probably underperform compared to others who are more energetic — but you will play with your heart and soul.

That’s how I envision Winners. They do, play, perform from their hearts. They don’t quit, because they know who they are and what their passions are, and they find the time to do those things. At first, it may be once a month. But eventually, it becomes central.

Winning means BEING what you are and want.
